The
low vision department provides low vision evaluations, and gives
access to magnification equipment and adaptive aids.
Lilac's low vision technician provides a low vision evaluation for
free. Evaluations are by appointment on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays
between 10 am and 1 pm. If a particular magnifier is found to be
effective, the participant may borrow the magnifier to try in his
or her own home to further evaluate its effectiveness. This department
has a wide variety of specialized magnification equipment, including
CCTV's (closed circuit magnification devices), and various lighting
sources. We offer magnifiers ranging from 2x to 12x.
Please note that the
person that will use the magnifier, should undergo this free evaluation.
With the many types of magnifiers and magnification levels available,
seldom can a family member or caregiver choose the best magnifier
for someone else's eyesight.
Adaptive
Aids
When
combined with rehabilitation teaching, adaptive aids help complete
the training needed to maximize independence for our clients. Specialized
adaptive aids may include long white canes, fluid level indicators,
talking watches, talking clocks, talking calculators, signature
guides and big bold tablets, big bold timers, large print address
books, Count-a-dose glucose reading machines, special sunglasses,
and much more. Lilac offers a wide variety of adaptive aids in order
to meet the diverse needs of our participants. A loaner service
of smaller visual aids is available on a limited basis.
